First United Methodist Church is committed to the Five Purposes that Christ gave His Church in the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-39) and the Great Commission. (Matthew 28:19-20)

"And He said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment.'"

                              Matthew 22:37-38

". . . baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."

                                  Matthew 28:19

". . . teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and to, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

                                   Matthew 28:2

"And a second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"

                                  Matthew 22:39

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations . . . ."

                                  Matthew 28:19

Dear Family Member,

Hard to believe, but our Treasures of the Transformed Life study is quickly passing by. Commitment Weekend is just a few weeks away.

At this point, I want you to think back to the beginning, and what your expectations were. Did God meet you there? Have you found new levels of thirst and new ways of satisfying that thirst? How is He continuing to deepen your levels of trust, faith, and wisdom as you continue your daily readings?

Personally, I believe this study is bringing us closer congregationally, and truly establishing the church as family. I’m excited to see how these new levels of unity will make us even more effective in showing Christ to our community and each other. I’m excited, too, about new levels of commitment through service, prayer, attendance, and financial gifts.

But we can’t keep taking it all in without giving anything back out. So now’s the time to put your faith in action. There’s a commitment card and service commitment form enclosed with this letter (children and youth also have age-appropriate cards available for their commitments). I’d like you to start thinking about how you’ll fill them out, so they will be ready to turn in on Commitment Weekend,  February 9th and 10th.  As you’ll notice, you have the opportunity to be specific about which areas of service you’d like to take part in, and how much you plan to give financially. You’re also able to make a special commitment to help build a seminary in Hong Kong.  There is also a commitment to join our “Time to Grow” team We’re hoping for 500 people who will make a commitment to attend one training time in April and one Celebration Banquet in December. Every commitment is important, but the “Time to Grow” commitment is new, and combined with our other commitments, has the power to revolutionize our church. Do remember that the more you’re willing to share in terms of time, money, and effort, the more opportunity you give the Lord to bless you in return. The life poured out, after all, is the one that God can more easily fill.

Please consider your commitments with much prayer. God wants to partner with us in His work, and involving Him in the decision-making process ensures that His will is done, rather than simply our own.

I do hope this experience has been a rich, rewarding one for you, and I’d like encourage you to continue any good habits in regard to prayer, Bible study, community, or group discussion you’re picking up along the way. This is in no means an end. Rather, it’s a beginning to a new life that God has called us to, one that we can enjoy both as individuals and as part of the church family. See you on Sunday!

In Christ,

Stephen Ramsdell, Senior Pastor

TIME to GROW

We learn from the New Testament that the early church grew in dramatic strides.  The church multiplied from a few to many in a short time as the message of Jesus Christ was shared from person to person.  That is the strategy that Jesus taught.  That’s the prerequisite for joining our “Time to Grow” Team in 2008.  This is a very focused outreach ministry that needs YOU to be successful!  It’s also a team that could change our church forever as we reach out to new people, inviting them to worship, and helping them connect to Christ and our church.   All you do is commit to attend two meetings: April 13, 2008, from 4:30 to 6:30pm and a Celebration Banquet on December 7, 2008 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. This involves the central purpose of every Christian, sharing the Good News. Our goal is to build a 500 member team which will make this the largest commitment of community effort we’ve ever made. You are critical to our success in making God’s love visible through our efforts to grow.
