Being selected to serve as an Acolyte at First United Methodist Church is an honor which is given to 3rd , 4 th , and 5 th grade students. These students have been recommended by their teachers as possessing a love for the Lord and have been regular in their attendance at both Sunday School and/or Church.
The duty of the Acolyte is to lead the processional into the sanctuary carrying a lighted taper. The Acolyte will light the candles on the altar table in front of the sanctuary then move to the seating area to the left side of the chancel and be seated next to the pastors. When the time in the service comes to receive the offering, the Acolytes will move to the front of the altar table, face the table and look up to the cross, then pick up the collection plates and take them down the two steps to the altar rail giving them to the ushers. When the ushers turn to collect the offering from the congregation, the Acolytes will slowly return to their seats. After the offering is collected and the congregation rises for the singing of the Doxology, the Acolytes will again slowly return to the altar to collect the plates from the ushers and remain there until the scripture reading is over. The Acolytes will then return the plates to the altar table and slowly return to their seats. It is extremely important that the Acolytes remain quiet and reverent when sitting in the chancel area.
At the close of the service, during the singing of the final hymn, the Acolytes will slowly move to the side of the altar table and will light their tapers from the candles, extinguish the candles and slowly lead the processional of ministers up the center aisle while the congregation sings the closing hymn.
The Acolytes will wear white robes with blue collars. Boys should wear long pants, not shorts, and girls may wear dresses or slacks under the robes. It is very important that you honor your commitment to serve on the date you have been scheduled. The names of the Acolytes serving will appear in the printed bulletin. In case of illness, please call Dawn Wilson , 752-4858 , before 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. On the Sunday you are to serve, please leave your Sunday School class at 10:30 a.m. and meet the Mrs. Wilson in the robing area in the Chapel Foyer area.
